On this day, 13 Feb 1971, Muswell Hills finest The Kinks played Cardiff University after previously playing Aberystwyth University the night before.
Regarded as one of the most influential rock bands of the 1960s they had released the album Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One at the end of 1970 which included their hit single Lola, released that summer and a huge hit for the band.
The song’s writer said of Lola: “ I wanted to write a hit. It wasn't just the song. it was the musical design. It wasn't a power chord song like "You Really Got Me". It was a power chord beginning. It needed a special acoustic guitar sound ... sonorous, growling, with an attack to it.”
The album also featured Apeman, another 1970 hit for the band.
