ChaseTen Records Gig Preview - Tomorrow Night!

ChaseTen Records presents their debut, free entry gig in the Zen Bar, Cardiff Atrium. Tuesday 14th, 7:30 pm.

The event combines the work of three talented musicians/bands, based in South Wales, all coming together for one night only at the University of South Wales, Cardiff Campus.

Opening the show is Newport based singer, Ethan Hargreaves, a must-see with a fine repertoire of acoustic originals and covers, followed by pop-duo, Jasmine. Straight from performing at the amazing Immersed Festival, the pair will be performing an outstanding program of music.

Closing the night is Catch 22, an up-and-coming indie-rock band formed at the University of South Wales. With their anticipated debut single, Kaleidoscope, set to be released in the near future. They will be performing an unmissable set.

Immersed 2023

Immersed! 2023 will take place 17-19th February in partnership with Orchard Live and Libertino Records to raise awareness and funds for Music Declares Emergency, the industry’s climate change charity.

The fifth Immersed! Festival returns to Tramshed Cardiff on Saturday 18th February for another year of exciting musical talent, showcasing South Wales’s ever-evolving, diverse music scene over four stages and accompanied by a unique narrative experience and important sustainability message.

For our main stage headliner, Immersed! unleashes Lady Leshurr, the MOBO award-winning rapper who brings her explosive live show to Cardiff for the first time in five years.  Well known for her charitable work, Lady Leshurr was awarded the British Empire Medal by the Queen in 2020 after she donated all the proceeds for her “Quarantine Speech” to the NHS.  Lady Leshurr will be supported by Sage Todz, whose “O Hyd” became the unofficial anthem of the Welsh football team in Qatar, alongside the mighty Minas, who will be performing tracks from his outstanding new album “All My Love Has Failed Me”. Completing the mainstage line up are Cardiff punk titans Terrapins, hard-hitting hip hop duo DiffJaxx and the explosive trio Shlug.  Curated by University of South Wales students, the four stages feature over forty artists and bands.  Expect an eclectic music mix, DJs, street food, live theatre, workshops, a tattoo parlour and an upcycled fashion market.

The festival weekend kicks off on Friday 17th February with the Immersed! 5th Birthday Awards Event at the Cardiff Atrium in collaboration with Libertino Records, a celebration of the artists and key players that have made Immersed! so vibrant and special over the last five years.   The event will feature live performances from participants of Skills Competition Wales, and a music industry careers fair.  After the main event at the Tramshed on Saturday, the festival concludes on Sunday 19th February with Immersed TV, an online live broadcast featuring highlights from the main stage, exclusive artist interviews and “5 Years”, an Immersed! legacy documentary.

We are partnering with climate change charity Music Declares Emergency to highlight the effects of climate breakdown and help promote change towards a greener and more sustainable future.   For the first time in its four-year history, the festival will feature a compelling narrative experience. Each of the stages will embody one of the four elements: Fire, Earth, Air and Water cohering to the festival’s theme of climate change. USW Drama students will be cast as “Wizards”, alongside a wide range of absorbing characters that will engage with audiences and encourage them to participate in the festival’s narrative.

Since the festival was founded four years ago, it continues to collaborate with a wide array of musicians, promoters, labels and organisations across South Wales to support its vibrant music scene. For 2023, Immersed! aspires to build upon previous years and create an exciting new experience for audiences through its compelling narrative experience, fringe events and fifth birthday awards ceremony.  Are you ready to be Immersed?

Preview - Groan Ups

Following their phenomenal rise to global success with smash-hit comedies The Play That Goes Wrong, The Comedy About a Bank Robbery, Peter Pan Goes Wrong and The Goes Wrong Show on BBC One, multi-award-winning Mischief return to the stage with their brand-new comedy all about growing up.

Something a little different from Mischief, Groan Ups is a comedy all about growing up. Following an unruly classroom of six-year-olds as they journey through anarchic teenage life, through to adulthood, this comedy asks the real questions – do we choose who we become? Is the story of our lives already written? Do we ever really grow up?

Groan Ups premiered in the West End at the Vaudeville Theatre in September 2019 and also featured on the Royal Variety Performance in the presence of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

In addition to their stage work, Mischief’s hugely successful six-part TV Series, The Goes Wrong Show, aired in the UK on BBC ONE and on Amazon Prime Video in the US, Canada and Australia.

The show received a 2020 TV Choice Award nomination for Best Comedy and has recently been nominated in the Comedy category at the 2021 National Television Awards.

Series two is currently in production.

Phil Lynott 35 Years on....

image1-17.jpeg

Today marks the 35th anniversary of the death of a true music great. Irish rocker Phil Lynott passed away 4th January 1986 at Salisbury District Hospital.
Lynott was born in the West Midlands of England, but grew up in Dublin with his grandparents. He remained close to his mother, Philomena, throughout his life. He fronted several bands as a lead vocalist, including Skid Row alongside Gary Moore, before learning the bass guitar and forming Thin Lizzy in 1969. After initial success with "Whiskey in the Jar", the band had several hits in the mid-1970s such as "The Boys Are Back in Town", "Jailbreak" and "Waiting for an Alibi", and became a popular live attraction combining Lynott's vocal and songwriting skills with dual lead guitars.

Lynott's last years were heavily affected by drug and alcohol dependency, leading to his collapse on 25 December 1985 at his home in Kew. He was discovered by his mother, who was not aware of his dependence on heroin. She contacted his wife, Caroline, who knew about it and immediately identified the problem as serious. After Caroline drove him to a drug clinic at Clouds House in East Knoyle, near Shaftesbury, he was taken to Salisbury Infirmary where he was diagnosed as suffering from septicaemia.
Although he regained consciousness enough to speak to his mother, his condition worsened by the start of the new year and he was put on a ventilator. He died of pneumonia and heart failure due to septicaemia in the hospital's intensive care unit on 4 January 1986, at the age of 36.
Lynott and Thin Lizzy were regular visitors to Cardiff being one of the first bands to play Cardiff Castle on the same bill as 10cc, Steeleye Span and Welsh rockers Man.
The band’s first ever Welsh gig was believed to be at the unlikely Skewen Rugby Club on 12 July 1971, their first Cardiff gig being Cardiff University, 4 March 1972, with the band Arrival. This was followed by a return in December to Cardiff’s Top Rank in a package that included Slade and Suzi Quatro.
Their next appearance was at the same venue on 17 Feb 1974, returning to the Rank again later in the year, 3 Dec.

Lizzy also made three appearances at Sophia Gardens for the Black Rose Tour 1980, The Chinatown tour 1980 and Renegade tour in 1981 promoting albums of the same titles.
The band ( including Lynott) last played Cardiff at St David’s Hall, March 1983.
Thin Lizzy’s line-up for the farewell tour is Phil Lynott on bass guitar and vocals, Scott Gorham on guitar and backing vocals, John Sykes on guitar and backing vocals, Darren Wharton on keyboards and backing vocals and Brian Downey on drums and percussion.
