Born 11th April 1969 Cerys Matthews was a leading light in the 'Cool Cymru' movement of the 1990s. The lead singer and founding member of the band Catatonia she was born in Cardiff before moving West to Swansea at the age of seven and there followed a bit of a nomadic life attending schools in Llanelli and Dorset and in the process becoming a talented linguist becoming fluent in Welsh, Spanish and French, and Catalan following a spell as a nanny in the region.
A talented musician from an early age, she formed Catatonia after meeting guitarist Mark Roberts and after a few earlier songs hit the lower reaches of the charts their recording 'Mulder and Scully' announced their arrival hitting the heady heights of No. 3 in the charts, from their hit album International Velvet which peaked at No.1 in the album charts.
Following the band break up, Matthews has become an award winning Radio presenter and a frequent TV presenter.
