On this day in 1979, The Police; Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers played their first gig in Cardiff. A earlier visit supporting The Alberto y Lost Trios Paranoias, was lost to weather as snow covered the U.K. in Dec 1978.

The gig at the Top Rank, Cardiff, was full to bursting as the band were just about to break big in the U.K. music scene. Supported by Fashion, it was a spectacular first appearance in the Capital, with Sting in particular happily signing autographs for the punters who arrived early for the gig.

The band’s first visit to Wales was March 1st 1978, at Alexander’s, Newport, which was The Police’s first public show with Sting and Steward Copeland also playing as part of headliner Cherry Vanilla’s band.
