On this day in 1983, Paul Young had his first UK No.1 single with his version of Marvin Gaye’s 'Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)'.
Young’s version of the song became a major hit thanks in large part to its creative fretless bass line contributed by Cardiff-born bass player Pino Palladino.
Pino said that when he first heard the song on the radio, he was embarrassed because “all musicians are the same… we all think we’re rubbish” and that “I’ll never get any other gigs.”
Of course, that track turned out to be far from that, and one that caused Pino’s career to take off.
Later on the song title was parodied by Welsh band Super Furry Animals with their 1999 song 'Wherever I Lay My Phone (That's My Home)'.
