On This Day 12 Nov 1966, The Beach Boys played the Capitol Theatre, Cardiff, with Lulu, David & Jonathan, Sounds Incorporated, the Golden Brass and Jerry Stevens. There were two shows at 6:15pm and 8:50pm
Before the first show, Carl accidently put his right hand through a plate glass window cutting his arm. In-between the first and second shows, he visited a local hospital accompanied by Dennis to receive a few stitches. Driving through town, he noted facetiously to a reporter “So this is Cardiff. Well at least I saw a bit of the city this time.”
Fan hysteria for the Beach Boys was at an all-time high and with such a gruelling schedule, that saw their leader Brian Wilson drop out of touring for a long period.
Wilson, preferring the comfort of the studio and without the added pressure of touring went on to write and produce some of the group's most outstanding music now far removed from their earlier surf and hot rod inspired tunes.
1966 was the year the ground-breaking album Pet Sounds, was released and is often cited as one of the most progressive pop albums ever made, praised for its vivid orchestration and thematic coherence.
Rolling Stone magazine placed the record at number two on their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The Beach Boys' magnum opus is acknowledged for being the main source of inspiration for The Beatles masterpiece Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club.
