So sad today to hear about the death of Mary Wilson, founding member of the Supremes and a Motown legend and one of the all-time best-selling girl groups in the world.
Wilson remained with the group despite the departures of other original members, Florence Ballard and Diana Ross.
She became a best-selling author in 1986 with the release of her autobiography, Dreamgirl: My Life As A Supreme, and later with a follow up Supreme Faith: Someday We’ll Be Together.
She continued to perform and was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, with both Ballard and Ross.
She died on the 8 Feb and two days before said that she was planning to release new material.
Wilson visited Cardiff for the last time in 2011 when she played St David’s Hall, one of only 4 UK dates, but more recently played the Grand Pavilion, Porthcawl in 2017.
She and the Supremes visited Cardiff in 1965 as part of a stunning Motown package featuring Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Martha and the Vandellas and rather oddly Georgie Fame, who was added to the bill due to the poor uptake of tickets despite the tour being a critical success.
