Acapela Studio - Mediaeval Baebes – UK Winter Tour

If I could sing like you I wouldn’t be a punk” confesses ardent fan Iggy Pop on his recent Mediaeval Baebes BBC6 Xmas Day special….

Join the Mediaeval Baebes in this very special December concert on their 2019 Winter tour at Acapela Studio – the only concert in Wales.

Conceptualised in 1996 by musical director and composer Katharine Blake, the Mediaeval Baebes’ unique and other-worldly choral style, alongside the spirited earthiness of their performances, has enchanted audiences throughout many beguiling incarnations.

After 3 chart-topping classical albums, an Ivor Novello Award, numerous sell-out tours of the UK, USA, Europe and Asia and, most recently, 2 Emmy- Award nominations for their soundtrack to ITV’s hit period drama, Victoria, the Mediaeval Baebes have established themselves as one the most successful, female-led early music and folk ensembles in Europe.

With lush, ethereal harmonies transporting the listener through myriad ancient and forgotten languages, the choir weaves its story-telling magic through original settings of mediaeval texts, as well as reinventing traditional folk songs and carols, often accompanied by a dazzling array of exotic and period instruments.

2019 sees the release of the group’s 9th studio album, the fantastical A Pocket Full of Posies, celebrating the dark, surreal and mystical in all the well-known nursery rhymes, handed down through the mothers of the British Isles.  To mark this release, this year’s 12 date UK winter concert tour will see the first visitations to these ancient songs, intermingled with numerous seasonal favourites.

Acapela Studio - Katey Brooks

For better or worse, it’s hard to imagine a songwriter with a deeper well of life experience to spill onto her lyric-sheet. Katey’s troubled childhood in a religious cult, her debilitating illness in her twenties and the shattering loss of her mother and her best friend: all were blows that might have swallowed up a lesser character. But music was the balm, and it was always made on her terms – evidenced by Katey’s early decision to reject a place at the star-making BRIT School and walk her own path.

First steps on Bristol’s open-mic scene pricked up ears. Show-stealing performances at Glastonbury, WOMAD and the Paralympics spread the word. Top-dollar recording sessions with Brian May, Bill Wyman, Paloma Faith and Joss Stone were offset by guitar-slinging gigs in squats, dive-bars and the occupied West Bank, where raw songs were born amongst the rubble.

Now, following up 2016’s acclaimed I Fought Lovers EP, all of Katey’s scars and redemptions are poured undiluted into the new material of REVOLUTE, inviting all who hear it to wear their pasts on their sleeves without shame. Written and self-produced by Katey herself – with a beautiful and intimate mix from Paul Quinn – these eleven songs run the gamut of genre, but are bound together by their emotional honesty.

St David's Hall - Squeeze The Difford and Tilbrook Songbook 2019

Squeeze_FB_1080x1920.jpg

Squeeze announce that ‘The Difford And Tilbrook Songbook Tour’ will aim to raise food, funds and awareness for the Trussell Trust network of food banks. The 27-date tour will see the South London legends play their extensive list of hits as a band as well as rare gems from their back catalogue and solo careers.

Speaking about the tour Glenn Tilbrook says “‘I am over the moon to be touring with Squeeze and raising donations for the Trussell Trust. We’ve had something of a renaissance in the last few years, and look forward to this continuing.” Commenting on his solo shows, as well as a run of dates with Wilko Johnson, which raised food and funds for the Trussell Trust, Glenn continues “I’ve been so humbled and moved by the generosity and compassion of the people coming to the gigs and donating. It’s disgraceful that in 2019 people can’t afford to put even the most basic food on the table. So far, more than 1.5 tonnes of food has been raised for those that need it, and I can’t wait to see how much we can achieve when Squeeze tour later in the year.”

Chris Difford adds “I feel excited about the tour. It’s a great band full of dedicated, hardworking, passionate people and we have a fabulous catalogue of songs to dip in and out of, so I feel completely blessed. Like Glenn I can’t wait to see what can be achieved at our shows in the UK this autumn. Glenn very much inspired this idea [to support the food banks] and it beggars belief that people in this day and age have to feed themselves from a food bank. I can’t wait to strap on the electric guitar again and sing the songs that got me where I am today.”

KEEP CARDIFF LIVE will have a review of tonight’s gig available soon, in the meantime take a look at the reviews of both Glenn Tillbrook & Chris Difford’s solo performances.

Acapela Studio - Ernie Halter

“Influenced by some of the legendary names of pop and soul, such as the Beatles, Elton John, Otis Redding, and Stevie Wonder, Californian Ernie Halter first began to make waves for himself with the release of his 2005 collection, Lo-Fidelity. The singer and songwriter got his start playing a small — mostly covers — coffeehouse gig in 1992, and was able to maintain the difficult position of being a working musician (and closet songwriter) by simply paying his dues, working on songs in his spare time, and playing in coffeehouses and smaller gigs to keep active on the scene and to sharpen his skills. Eventually, word of mouth and the Internet community on websites such as MySpace and YouTube worked in Halter’s favor, and by 2007 — and his next release, Congress Hotel (on Rock Ridge Music) — he had built up quite a buzz, and the staunchly indie Halter could be seen touring throughout much of the United States.” (Chris True All Music Guide)

Halter has released 7 albums, toured 50 states, and seen his popularity swell to more than 510,000 Twitter followers, 12,000 YouTube subscribers, and nearly 10,000 Facebook ‘Likes’.
